Data shows urgent case for larger library for residents in Cambridge and surrounds

New Waipā District Council data confirms what many of us already know: Cambridge urgently needs a larger, better-equipped library for its local residents.

The latest statistics show a 7.3% increase in library usage compared to the same time last year. The Cambridge Library alone issued 328,911 items, an increase of more than 24,000. In comparison, Te Awamutu issued 172,023 items, and digital platforms like Hoopla saw a notable rise as well.

A huge thank you to all the library staff across Waipā - you do an outstanding job every day. You're amazing!

However, despite the growth in books issued, Cambridge Library is struggling to keep up.

  • Books are being stored on the floor

  • Staff are working in cramped and unsatisfactory conditions

  • The overall space is simply too small for a town of our size.

The average visit to the Cambridge Library lasts just 18.74 minutes, compared to 25.65 minutes in Te Awamutu, which is likely a reflection of the more spacious and welcoming environment available there.

This isn’t just about borrowing books. Libraries are vital community hubs that provide

  • Internet access

  • Support services

  • A space for social connection

Cambridge deserves a facility that reflects the community’s growth and vibrancy.

As Mayor of Waipā, I will prioritise the development of a new, fit-for-purpose library and community hub for Cambridge.

I will work with Council to ensure this project is included in the next Long-Term Plan, advocate for funding, and engage with the community to design a space that meets our current and future needs.

This is a vital project for Waipā because investing in a new library is an investment in the community, education, and connections.
